Ingredients

1 & 1/2 cups red or orange lentils

3&1/2 cups water

1 in. piece of fresh ginger, peeled and grated

1 onion, peeled & sliced

1 tsp ground turmeric

1&1/2 tsp salt

pinch of sugar

1 large garlic clove

For the topping:

2 tbsp. sour cream or plain yogurt & tomato & fresh cilantro

Preparation

  1. Place the lentils, water, ginger, onion, turmeric, and salt in medium pan, crush and add garlic. Bring to boil, then reduce the heat. Simmer for 20-30 minutes until soft.
  2. Remove pan from heat and mash lentils with potato masher. Add a little hot water if the mixture is too thick. Keep hot.
  3. Transfer Dhal to a serving dish and top with yogurt, tomato and cilantro.
