Ingredients
yellow food coloring
1/4 cup warm water
2 pkg yeast
1/2 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 eggs + yolk from egg below, slightly beaten
1 1/2 cup scalded milk
2 Tbsp melted butter
approx. 6 1/2 cups sifted flour
for glaze:
1 egg white, beaten
sesame seeds
Preparation
Soften yeast in warm water. Put milk, butter, sugar, and salt into pan - scald milk. Cool to lukewarm. Pour in bowl.
Add 2 cups flour to milk & mix. Add yeast & water, eggs, food coloring, and mix. Add the remainder of the flour a little at a time
Knead dough and let rise. Punch down and divide into 6 pieces. Shape each into a strip. Braid 3 strips into a loaf and tuck ends under. Repeat with remaining 3 strips. Place onto cookie sheet and let rise. Then brush each loaf with the egg white & sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake at 350-375 for about 30 minutes.
Tip: you can tell when bread is done by either inserting a toothpick or tapping crust with fingernail. Don’t put loaves on same pan - use two that will fit into your oven. Otherwise they will glom together and not be pretty.
